Crillon the Brave

Located at the foot of Mont Ventoux, 12 km north east of Carpentras by the D974, Crillon le Brave is a small picturesque village with beautiful stone houses, perched at 363 meters with a magnificent view of "the giant of Provence", Mont Ventoux.
It was named in honor of their local heroic lord Louis de Balbe de Crillon, also nicknamed "the brave of the brave", at the end of the nineteenth century. The council of the village decided to call the commune "Crillon le Brave".

Directions: Arriving by Caromb road, the village opens to visitors through the Gérin gate. Continue your way and park in the car park in front of the town hall.
A huge bronze statue of 2 meters 30 representing Captain Crillon le Brave welcomes you to the entrance of the village as if to invite you to visit.

But do not go too fast inside: first enjoy the view from this height. To the right of the town hall, you can admire some tastefully restored houses, a little further you will discover in front of the main entrance of the hotel, on this small square, the Saint Romain church , entirely built in stone. Inside you will see a carved wooden altarpiece attributed to Bernus. From the church square you can reach the medieval castle. It is a private property closed to the visit and you can only admire from the outside its facades on which recent slots have been added. Common only agricultural in the past, Crillon has today developed a lot thanks to tourism. Many secondary villas are occupied during the season. On sunny days, the population increases widely. Do not leave Crillon le Brave without visiting the special cellars of the vineyards that produce the Côtes du Ventoux.
